Oh Kumon. What’s the offer With That Logo?

I took my young ones to Kumon week that is last thinking the 3 of us could bond over math diagnostics. We’d heard great reports about their results, and had some deluded fantasy of bonding at breakfast over Kumon worksheets and english muffins.

It’s 10 minutes a day, for crying out loud!

Wrong! My kids rejected the knowledge (opportunity?) with a fervor that stunned even me.

After attempts to bribe them failed, I made diversionary excuses to the sweet girl whom was running the center:

‘It’s got to be that logo,’ I told her. ‘ exactly why isn’t the guy that is little?’

She explained that it’s a ‘thinking face,’ and explained it was designed by the person that is same designed the Nike Swoosh (that we have yet to validate).

Here’s the logo explanation from the Kumon site:

Passage 1 / Passage 2 Relationship Questions


We find the ‘relationship’ questions for Passage 1 / Passage 2 to be so hard!

Main idea, no problem. Tone, easy.

But do not ask me personally to convey ‘the relationship’ involving the two passages in a really short phrase (i.e. 6-8 words). I fumble every time.

Here’s a Passage 1 / Passage 2 Relationship Recipe

  1. Read the relevant questions to see if there are any that relate to only one of this two passasges. If so, read that passage first and answer those questions.
  2. Study passage 1. Circle transitions, dashes, colons, etc. They signal something crucial.
  3. Underline last sentence (i.e. primary idea)
  4. Quickly jot down main idea in your words that are own shorthand.
  5. Note the tone: +
  6. Read passage that is second perform steps 2-5.
  7. Note the ‘relationship’ in shorthand involving the two passages.
  8. Cover up answers and appear with your own answer. Uncover answers and see if one of this numerous choice answers matches yours.
  9. Take note of everything so you aren’t taxing your working memory.

Brain Books (We’m Obsessed)


I’m using a loose definition of ‘brain book.’ i.e. they all relate solely to ‘how we learn.’

Here are my top picks:

1) Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn by John Hattie and Gregory Yates. This might be the very best of them, I do believe. Expensive, but worth every penny.

2) The Knowledge Deficit: Closing the Shocking Gap for American Children by E.D. Hirsch. I do not trust everything he says — just about 98%.

3) The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr

4) Moonwalking with Einstein: the creative Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer — extremely enjoyable. I learned lot while being entertained. Picks up steam in second half.

5) how about we pupils Like School: a scientist that is cognitive Questions regarding the way the Mind Works and What this means for the Classroom by Daniel Willingham — Haven’t actually finished this, but only because we’m savoring. Love.

6) Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Residence, and School by John Medina — Very fast look over. Not as in depth as a few of the others i have read — but good overview.

7) Mindset: The New Psychology of triumph by Carol Dweck — A positive attitude makes a difference. We concur.
